Kim Lewis is a New York-based flutist with immense passion as a performer and teacher. Informed by a rounded education in the arts throughout her childhood in Ohio, including study in dance, voice, and piano, she brings a wealth of experiences to her focus on the flute.
As a soloist, Kim has performed with the Central Jersey Symphony Orchestra and the Chelsea Symphony in NYC. Kim received first place in the New Jersey Flute Society Concerto Competition, as well as the Central Ohio Flute Association Competition – Collegiate Division. She was also twice a finalist in Bowling Green State University’s concerto competition.
Chamber ensembles that Kim has collaborated with have received honors in the Lillian Fuchs Chamber Competition and the Douglas Wayland Chamber Competition. Kim is a member of NU, a NYC based woodwind quintet that celebrates and expands the wind quintet by reimagining repertoire, performance, and the classical music culture. As a freelance musician in NYC, Kim frequently performs with the Chelsea Symphony.
Passionate about teaching, Kim has consistently taught private lessons for over 15 years, working with children through adults. Her diverse educational experience ranges from one-on-one instruction to leading large ensemble rehearsals, and she is frequently sought out for the instruction of flutists. Kim has collaborated with the Manhattan School of Music Outreach and Distance Learning programs, where she has taught students in NYC and across the country.
Kim has had the pleasure of performing for Denis Bouriakov, Jasmine Choi, Patricia George, Susan Hoeppner, Christina Jennings, George Pope, Lisa Garner Santa, Carol Wincenc, Sarah Frisof, James Hall, Stefan Hosskuldson, Eric Lamb, Emmanuel Pahud, Amy Porter, Thomas Robertello, Naomi Seidman, Yoobin Son, and Jim Walker. She has participated in the Sewanee Summer Music Festival, Amy Porter’s Anatomy of Sound Workshop, Christina Jennings’ Panoramic Flutist, and Le Domaine Forget Summer Music Academy.
Kim holds bachelor’s degrees in Music Education and Flute Performance from Bowling Green State University, where she studied with Conor Nelson and Nina Assimakopoulos, and a master’s degree in Flute Performance at the Manhattan School of Music, where she studied with Linda Chesis. She is currently a Resident Flutist at the Flute Center of New York.
